Save Canvas: a project to turn abandoned buildings in Downtown Minneapolis into makeshift art galleries. Everything that was used in the making of this project was 100% recycled—from the donated/used paint for the art, down to the materials used to make the posters promoting the event.
I helped create the concept and did the design and art direction for this project. Joe Belk was project lead/manager (among many other things) and Andrew Shannon and Aaron Bickner did the wonderful art. Many others helped.
This photo shows the largest of the three buildings before we began the project.
Here's us spraying paint from an old fire extinguisher as we started work inside one of the buildings.
And here's the installation inside that same building.
Below are images of the pop-up gallery/installation on the opening night of Save Canvas, August 8, 2009. The installations are still up.
To make it a bit more interactive, we let people add to the installation with squirt guns full of paint.
Lastly, here are the posters I designed and we screen printed on old vinyl ads and newsprint found inside the buildings.
Thanks for reading this far down. Here's a video of the process of putting this project together.
